about

Caner am y Porthor means Sing for the Porter in Welsh. Close to the front door of this extraordinary Gothic building (The Old College on the sea front at Aberystwyth) there are grand stone steps leading up to a platform with a large window. There was once a fountain here connecting this part of the building to the sea. The lyrics describe the the porter walking around the building with jingling keys humming to himself every now and again.

lyrics

Caner am y Porthor
Caner am y Porthor
Ble rwyt ti? A beth iw'r gân?
A beth iw'r gân? A ble rwyt ti?
Rwyn hanner cofio hanner clywed hanner canu
Rwyn hanner cofio hanner clywed hanner canu

Gan ddisgwyl clywed swn dy draed ar y marmor
Gan ddisgwyl teimlo gwres dy law

Dwi yma yn y dwr, dwi yma yn y rhaeadr
dere hen gyfaill
dere fy nghalon
dere seren fy mreudwyd
dere cariad fy mywyd
dere i'r trothwy

Ai ti agorodd y drws i'm croesawu?
Ai ti agorodd y drws er gweitha'r dilyw?
Wyt ti'n clywed fy nghân

Caner am y Porthor
Caner am y Porthor
Ble rwyt ti? A beth iw'r gân?
A beth iw'r gân? A ble rwyt ti?
Rwyn hanner cofio hanner clywed hanner canu
Rwyn hanner cofio hanner clywed hanner canu

I will follow you
I remember the warmth of your hand
Where are you?
I'm here
In the water in the bubbling fountain
And when I hear
I hear your footsteps on the stone
I remember my song
Come with the echo of your voice

You know the way through rising tides
Let the tides flow
Your know the way from sea to shell
Bubbling fountain

Dere dere dere dere dere dere dere dere
Rwyt ti'n gyfarwydd â'r cysgod a'r meini
Rwy ti'n gyfarwydd ag alaw y camau
Rwyr ti'n gyfarwydd â chan y calonnau
Dilynnaf i dilynnaf i dilynnaf i...

When the waves crashes sing it
when the stone tumbles sing it
when the fire rises sing it
when the fountain bubbles sing it
when you've lost the words sing it
when you've lost the tune sing it
when I hear your voice sing it
sing to me beloved...
